The launch of the monitor is envisaged to be the start of a new era of near real time monitoring, using the light reflection of the water body and interpreting the spectral information.

The method is quick and efficient and combines the distant use of satellite images and the ground truthing using the field monitor.

The monitor is generating continuous water quality data, which are transferred to the water utility. Forecasts of cyanobacteria blooms a few days in advance will allow proper economic and efficient water management. Mitigating actions may be applied quicker and the general public will be informed on the spot.

The EcoWatch development is financially supported by Provinsje Fryslân, the Dutch Ministery of Economic Affairs and the Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland (SNN).
